Community Coastal Clean-up at Changi Beach

Saturday, Apr 9, 2016 -

Time: 8:45am - 10:30am

Coastal clean-up2 Over 70% of the planet is covered by the ocean. The ocean is the major regulating force in the earth’s climate system and represents the largest carbon sink on the planet. Healthy marine and coastal ecosystems, along with their services, are essential to maintain the earth’s life support system. That is why the United Nations has included conserving oceans as one of its global goals for sustainable development. To help achieve this goal, all countries are encouraged to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities by 2025. The High Commission of Canada would like to invite members of the Canadian community in Singapore, including families and students, to join with Singaporean youth on 9 April 2016, in picking up litter along Changi Beach as part of a joint community coastal clean-up organized by the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Council and the High Commission of Canada. While we do not expect to find a lot of rubbish, the occasion will serve as an opportunity for both communities to come together in recognition of the importance of protecting our oceans and our shared commitment in this regard. It will also serve as an excellent platform for bonding between the Canadian expat community and Singaporeans while making our beaches clean for all to enjoy. Guests-of-Honour: Dr. Mohammad Maliki bin Osman, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Ministry of Defense and Mayor, South East District and H.E. Heather Grant, High Commissioner of Canada in Singapore Garbage bags and refreshments will be provided.

McGill Logoconsilium-logo CanCham is pleased to welcome Marc Weinstein, Vice Principal, University Advancement at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, to highlight the value of higher education in Canada. Vice Principal Weinstein will address how Canada has traditionally been perceived by some as a cold country located far away from Singapore. In truth, the nation has some of the best and most reasonably priced universities in the world, located in cities that have been consistently ranked “most student friendly” globally. Through the case of McGill University, this presentation highlights what a leading 21st century research-intensive university in Canada and its global alumni network could offer potential students and parents in Singapore.

iAdvisory Seminar: Benefits of TPP for your F&B Manufacturing Business

Friday, Oct 14, 2016 -

Time: 2:00pm - 5:30pm

The Singapore Business Federation and its partner chambers in the “Network of TPP Chambers based in Singapore”, specifically the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, the Latin American Chamber of Commerce Singapore, the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Singapore, and the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, are supporting the efforts of SPRING & IE Singapore to share with F&B Manufacturers on how they can benefit from the TPP. The TPP is a Free Trade Agreement (“FTA”) between 12 countries: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam. Collectively, TPP signatories comprise nearly 40 percent of world trade, and account for over 30 percent of Singapore’s total trade. However, in order to benefit from the opportunities arising from the TPP, it is important to understand how its terms can work to augment each company’s own strengths and capabilities. It is in this spirit that we invite you to attend this upcoming iAdvisory Seminar on “Understanding TPP to benefit your F&B Manufacturing Business” which will be held on 14th October 2016, 2-5pm at IE Singapore. Canada - ASEAN Week - Doing business with ASEAN

Monday, Dec 12, 2016 - Friday, Dec 16, 2016

Time: 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Canada - ASEAN Week - Doing business with ASEAN In anticipation of of the 40th anniversary of Canada-ASEAN relations in 2017, Tractus is hosting Canada – ASEAN Week, a week-long series of webinars discussing the opportunities and challenges for Canadian companies investing in, and trading with, five of the most important ASEAN member states. Having celebrated its 50th year since independence in 2016, Singapore is a model of success, growing from a small fishing village, Singapore is today a global finance service and center and world leader in many advanced industries and innovation technology sectors. Singapore rapid economic growth in the 20th century to its current advanced state of development have, however, raised questions about the country’s avenues for future growth. Join Singapore Country Manager Joshua Brown for his state on the state of affairs and how Canada fits in. Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation on Earth with over 250 million people and median age of just 28 years old. With an emerging middle class, this demographic dividend bodes well for the economy as the nation works to improve the business environment, and attract foreign investment. Tune in on Indonesia Chief Representative Daniel Bellefleur for his thoughts on Indonesia’s prospects and opportunities for Canadian companies. While political turmoil and natural disaster was wracked the country for decades, Thailand is currently experiencing a major paradigm shift. The Government is enacting expansive fiscal policies to promote a shift in the economy away from the middle-income-trap and into “Thailand 4.0.” For Tractus, Consulting Manager Arunrat Chumroentaweesup will provide her thoughts on the view ahead for Thailand and what that future will look like for Canadian companies. After opening its door in 2011 to the global community, and initiating economic and policy reforms, Myanmar has experienced a rapid transition into uncharted territory. Myanmar’s untapped and undeveloped market has been viewed by international investors as the “last frontier” with an abundance of opportunities, but not without its fair share of challenges across all aspects of society. Join Country Manager Martin Jancik for an update on ASEAN’s most frontier market and where Canadian companies fit in. Vietnam has tripled the size of its economy in ten years. Growth has been helped by large amounts of FDI into the country, motivated be access to a large, low cost labor pool. A combination of regional and global economic growth trends, continuous improvements in the business environment and a strengthening consumer class are expected to keep growth apace. Join Tractus Consulting Manager Antonio Sequeros for insights from the work he and his team are leading for Canadian and other international clients from HCMC to Hanoi. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Join us for a webinars on Doing Business with ASEAN presented twice, once during Canadian business hours and once during Asean business hours. To Register click here.

CanCham Singapore invites you to join us for this fascinating event: How Financial Technologies Can Revolutionalise the Renewable Energy Industry
Please join Canadian, Dr. Matthew Peloso, Founder and CEO of Sun Electric, as he explores how blockchain has revolutionalised the way we think of transactions, leading to the dramatic rise of FinTech industries applicable to everything from shipping to bills payment. Bitcoin, the infamous launch of currencies encoded in cryptographic codes, still trades and has shown the world that information technologies impact on businesses and transactions are here to stay. In this presentation, Dr. Peloso will discuss how financial technologies can revolutionalise the renewable energy industry - demonstrating a certification of clean power projects in Singapore and a live transactional system for authenticating electricity transactions over Singapore's world-class electricity network.
Date: Tuesday, 18 April 2017 Venue: Madison Rooms, 23A Coleman St, Singapore 179806 Time: 6:30pm-8:30pm Member Price: $40.00  Non-Member Price: $50.00 (includes 1 drink + Canapés)
The Sun Electric Group specialises in solar energy technology, urban solar solutions, and energy management services. Sun Electric is Singapore’s first fully licensed solar energy retail company. Sun Electric is transforming how people consume energy by connecting rooftop owners with clean energy customers through its proprietary power supply and energy management system that successfully embeds solar energy into a city’s energy mix. In Singapore, Sun Electric is currently working with government agencies and companies to maximise the potential of unused roof spaces. They have already sealed more than 13 MWp worth of solar installation projects to date, which is enough to provide for 4,000 four-room HDB flats. Sun Electric was listed as one of the "World's Top 10 most Innovative Companies in the Energy Sector" by Fast Company 2016 alongside heavyweights Tesla and Toyota. Dr. Matthew Peloso read the bachelor of Physics and started his career in the physical optics industry. He followed research positions contributing to quantum communications technologies before moving into solar energy. His seminar research won awards including a plenary talk for his doctoral thesis. Dr. Peloso completed his Bachelors of Science at the University of Waterloo. He studied IP Law and Technology Management, and received an MBA from the National University of Singapore, while setting up two solar energy companies. His financial experience includes project finance; particularly in the energy sector, and financial modelling. Dr. Peloso uses his broad background of experience spanning finance, business, IP law and technology development, and sales to solve key problems in technology industries, and build businesses around the solutions.

New Energy Realities: Digital Transformation

Thursday, Apr 27, 2017 -

Time: 7:30am - 9:30am

BritCham has invited CanCham Members to join them for this upcoming event. CanCham members may registered at a preferred rate of $70/person. Digital spans a broad spectrum of new ways to do business and is increasingly front of mind in surveys of CEOs (PwC/ KPMG). The panel discussion will cover three broad themes - underpinned with a foundation of cyber security: 1. Smart technology – Using IOT sensors, robotics and digital labour, to transform business operations in areas such as predictive maintenance 2. Skills – How to empower employees in a digital world 3. Innovation and insights from data - new ways to build out and increase loyalty from customers with new products and services Digitisation impacts job security. No longer are 100s or 1000s of people needed to run energy operations in plants. It also creates new roles. Innovation is happening inside and outside of the organization. The challenge is to capture new ideas for the energy industry which is less agile that other sectors whilst transitioning from old to new energy systems With automated workflows, machine learning, apps for accounting and controls, what skills will be required and is Singapore developing talent for the digital world? Innovation is changing the way we use analytics to measure consumer behavior, predict demand and build new energy systems, safely and securely in a distributed world. ASEAN-Canada Relations: Anniversaries, Histories and the Future of a Partnership

Wednesday, Jun 28, 2017 -

Time: 3:00pm - 4:00pm

The Asian Studies Centre and the ISEAS Yusok Ishak Institute Present: ASEAN LECTURE SERIES ASEAN-Canada Relations: Anniversaries, Histories and the Future of a Partnership
About the Lecture Date : 28 June 2017, Wednesday Time: 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm Venue: ISEAS Seminar Room 2
In 2017, Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, ASEAN its 50th anniversary, and the ASEAN-Canada Dialogue Partnership its 40th year. Its longstanding partnership with ASEAN has provided a solid anchor for Canada to sustain its footprint in the constantly changing architecture of Asia-Pacific. Going forward, questions remain about the future of ASEAN as well as the place of Canada not only in the world but also Asia. With Canada’s foreign policy being pulled in all vectors – the US at its south, Europe across the Atlantic and Asia on the other side of the Pacific – Canada will have to reassess what its priorities are as it reaches this important milestone. Ultimately, both ASEAN and Canada should see value in enhancing their partnership into the future as the world’s centre of gravity shifts decidedly towards Asia. About the Speaker Richard Stubbs is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Political Science at McMaster University in Canada. He was Academic Adviser to the Canada-ASEAN Centre and has been a long-time observer of ASEAN affairs. He has published widely on security, regional political economy and region building in Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific regions. His books include Hearts and Minds in Guerrilla Warfare: The Malayan Emergency 1948-1960 (Oxford), Rethinking Asia's Miracle Economy (Palgrave Macmillan). He has also co-edited three editions of Political Economy and the Changing Global Order with Geoffrey R.D. Underhill (Oxford) and Theorizing Southeast Asian Relations with Amitav Acharya (Routledge) and The Routledge Handbook of Asian Regionalism with Mark Beeson (Routledge).

SME Convention 2017 - Opportunities In 2018

Friday, Oct 13, 2017 -

Time: 8:30am - 5:00pm

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are a significant pillar of Singapore’s economy, making up 99 percent of all businesses, employing nearly seven out of ten workers and contributing close to half of Singapore’s national GDP. A strong and growing SME community is essential to building a resilient and competitive Singapore economy. The annual SME Convention is a carefully crafted event, dedicated to address the needs of the SME community. Each year the programmes are curated to provide SMEs with tangible information, that seeks to help SMEs build capabilities and access markets. While the economy is easing into a state of stability, sentiments on the ground are generally still clouded with uncertainties. Instead of taking the traditional stance of waiting out to ride through the storm, there is an increasingly need for local businesses to leverage on new vehicles and tools for expansion and growth. The theme for 2017 installment is simple, but vital. “Opportunities In 2018" aims to equip the delegates with actionable outcomes, to better position themselves for growth. Predicting AI: The Past, Present and Future Promise of Artificial Intelligence

Wednesday, Oct 25, 2017 -

Time: 1:30pm - 2:30pm

As part of the High Commission of Canada’s Speaker Series to mark Canada’s 150th Anniversary, the High Commission of Canada invite you to a presentation: Predicting AI: The Past, Present and Future Promise of Artificial Intelligence
The modern field of AI—the goal of building intelligent machines—has stumbled and died nearly three deaths since its inception at the Dartmouth Conference in 1956. Its current resurgence, due largely to investments in the field of machine learning, demonstrates an uncanny ability to recognize patterns in large data sets and to predict outcomes with tremendous accuracy. Some believe that we are quickly heading towards “AGI” (artificial general intelligence)— machines that can successfully perform every kind of task that human beings can perform. By: Dr. Ian Kerr, Canada Research Chair in Ethics, Law & Technology, and Full Professor Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa
Opening Remarks: Her Excellency, Lynn McDonald, High Commissioner of Canada to Singapore Day/Date: Wednesday, 25 October 2017 Time: 13:30 – 14:30 Venue: High Commission of Canada, #11-01, One George Street, Singapore 049145 Complimentary Event RSVP to norliyah.jamal@international.gc.ca
Dr. Ian Kerr holds the Canada Research Chair in Ethics, Law & Technology at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law, with cross appointments to the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Philosophy and School of Information Studies. He has published books and articles on topics at the intersection of ethics, law and technology and is currently engaged in research on two broad themes: (i) Privacy and Surveillance; and (ii) Human-Machine Mergers. Building on his prior Oxford University Press book, Lessons from the Identity Trail, his ongoing privacy work focuses on the interplay between emerging public and private sector surveillance technologies, civil liberties and human rights. His more recent work, including his new book, Robot Law (with Ryan Calo and Michael Froomkin), focuses on legal and ethical implications of AI, robotics and implantable devices.

Time: 6:00am - 6:00pm

FUTURE ECONOMY CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION 2017 The global economic landscape is changing rapidly. Getting Leadership to a Higher Ground: Skills and Qualities to Thrive Amidst Market Disruptions

Friday, Nov 3, 2017 -

Time: 1:30pm - 4:30pm

SIM Professional Development (SIM PD) in collaboration with LinHart Group is helping to strengthen Singapore’s people skills and competitiveness to contribute to the national agenda. The effort leverages on LinHart's experience of working with thousands of CEOs and senior leaders from 30 countries and in 30 industries, coupled with SIM PD experience in providing a holistic and immersive professional learning experience for C-suite executives and PMEs. Why do companies and the people in Singapore really need to thrive in the 21st century? We think it is more than just skills. Linhart has found influence; courage and the capacity to make judgement; and self-leadership to be missing, particularly among leaders in Singapore, and generally among leaders globally. The absence of these Big 3 qualities in your leaders could impact your company’s regional and global competitiveness. Imagine the difference it would make to your company if a few more of you possessed the Big 3 qualities. "I set myself a new goal - to transform the leadership landscape here, one chief executive at a time. My dream: to see a Singaporean chief executive at the helm of a Fortune 500 company one day." Tsun-yan Hsieh, LinHart Group Founder and Sage
Event Synopsis It takes a village to raise a child. The national agenda is everyone's business. It takes a community to help everyone uncover the leader in them, to challenge and support them in gaining their sense of inner direction and the skills needed for success and satisfaction. Come and be a part of that community. We invite you to discover and discuss the nature and impact of the Big 3. Find out how your people could develop them and how you can help them to do so. This programme will develop middle to senior executives to: – have the courage to make the call instead of leaving it to the boss to decide – collaborate more with each other without the boss having to knock heads – speak up more (confidently) in meetings with senior management This event is for middle to senior executives who are serious about people's development and are looking for deep listening and sharing. ICE IN THE TROPICS: Canada 150-Finland 100-Singapore Arctic Collaboration

Thursday, Nov 9, 2017 - Sunday, Dec 3, 2017

Time: 9:00am - 6:00pm

We have much to celebrate in 2017! It is Canada's 150th birthday and Finland's 100th birthday. To celebrate these milestones together in Singapore, and as founding members of the Arctic Council, we joined forces to create this exciting month of Arctic-themed activities in the heart of Singapore - at the beautiful National Museum. Canada and Finland were among the original founders of the Arctic Council. Canada was Chair of the Arctic Council in 2013, when Singapore joined as an observer. Finland is current Chair of the Arctic Council. While Singapore might be far away geographically from the Arctic, what happens in the Arctic has implications for Singapore's geography, environment, and economy. The melting of polar ice threatens to raise sea water levels around the world - it is low lying island states that will be most affected. At the same time, shipping routes in the Arctic may open up, creating economic opportunities. How we balance these opportunities and risks is a key challenge - and one of great relevance. Do not miss the opportunity to come and learn more about one of the world's most fascinating, remote regions. All events are free, but some do require registration. We are bringing the Arctic closer to home, here in Singapore! For more information about the exhibit and a list of upcoming activities and events visit https://www.iceinthetropics.com/.

The Honourable Michael H. Wilson, Chancellor, University of Toronto, cordially invites you to a thought-provoking presentation on Disrupting the Aging Landscape, From Smart Homes to Robots By: Professor Alex Mihailidis, Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto
Our population is getting older and we need better approaches to providing care. Despite significant advances in technologies for wellness in older adults, most prototypes have not made it to market. Many are simply not user friendly or efficient enough for aging adults to operate. To ensure the usefulness of future technologies, we need new ways of thinking about their design. We need disruptive technologies. Professor Mihailidis will explain the concept and how we can apply it to the next generation of technologies for older adults. Professors Mihailidis's presentation is part of an ongoing series of compelling lectures for alumni, hosted in cities around the world. U of T Where You Are brings the University right into your community. Stay informed, inspired and connected, because together we are boundless.
